August 2025Patrol Update – Playa Linda

In August, our Playa Linda patrol team recorded 55 nests poached, 38 saved, and 7 turtles tagged — an unofficial 40% rescue rate. This is a significant improvement from last year, showing the impact of nightly patrols, community awareness, and local partnerships. Every saved nest brings us closer to a safer future for sea turtles on our beach.

As August comes to a close, we want to share the results of another intense month on Playa Linda. Our team recorded:

  • 55 nests poached

  • 38 nests saved

  • 7 turtles tagged

That gives us an unofficial 40% rescue rate, a significant improvement compared to this time last year. Every nest saved represents hundreds of eggs that now have a chance to hatch and make it to the ocean.

This progress is the direct result of both new volunteers who joined us this month and long-time volunteers who took on extra shifts to increase beach coverage during peak nesting time. Some nights were incredibly rewarding, with multiple nests saved on both evening and morning patrols. Other nights brought disappointment as poachers struck hard, and we lost more than one nest despite our best efforts.

We are especially grateful for the support of the local police and the Coast Guard, whose presence on the beach makes a real difference. We hope to see more of them in the months ahead. If anyone would like to donate towards meals for the visiting Coast Guard, please reach out. Your contribution helps us welcome and sustain their much-needed assistance.

With the increased success of our patrols, we also face new challenges. More saved nests mean we urgently need additional gear and hatchery space. Donations of gloves, headlamps, buckets, chicken wire, wood, or funds to hire help for moving sand would make a tremendous difference. If you would like to support in this way, please contact us.

🌿 How You Can Help 🌿

  • Volunteer for evening or morning turtle patrols

  • Donate meals for visiting Coast Guard patrols

  • Contribute supplies such as gloves, lights, buckets, or hatchery materials

  • Offer financial support to expand our hatchery and increase nest protection

Every effort — whether time, resources, or funding — helps protect the turtles of Playa Linda and ensures their future for generations to come.
